The Old Yellow Van (for Shannon)
04.03.05 (7:16 pm)   [edit]

In 1997 I had just had the twins and money was tight.  We didn't have anything suitable to haul 5 kids around in.  I had totalled our older Suburban two weeks after the twins were born, while driving sleep-deprived.  So I badgered hubby and we went to look at a van in the paper that was pretty cheap.  It was painted TAXI yellow because - YES - it used to be a taxi and you could still see a big unfaded spot on the door where the magnetic sign used to be.  We bought it for next to nothing.

On Christmas eve 1998 we were taking it to Omaha and it broke down on the way.  Serious stuff - it threw a rod.  Hubby started walking to the nearest exit, and we called AAA to tow the van away.  A semi truck driver with a sleeper cab stopped to find out what he could do to help.  Turns out he was going to Omaha and he gave us (all 7 - the twins in carrier car seats) a ride the rest of the way.  We called ahead for my mother-in-law to meet us.  Since she only had a car, she had to make two trips to take us home.  We bought another van the day after Christmas.

On the way back home, we stopped by the van long enough to sell it to a local scrap dealer.  My kids nearly cried for that van!!  They still tell me they remember it and miss it!  Go figure.....

We called that truck driver (Steve) an angel and he truly was.  We always remember trucker Steve at Christmas.  We didn't know how to contact him, so we couldn't properly thank him.  But to be honest, I don't think we're entirely convinced that he was "real".  He certainly illustrated the spirit of Christmas in a way my children (the ones that were old enough to remember) will never forget!

Dear Gawd you have had the most intriguing life!!! Seriously, that is like the storyline for a "7th Heaven" Christmas episode or something! I LOVED it :)

So the old van was a former taxi? lol that makes the story even better. My ex husband spent a short amount of time as a 'trucker' when he was in between jobs once, he told me that while they(other drivers) weren't much to look at or smell, they were some of the most generous people in the world. Your story certainly proves that. Thanks for the great read :)

I was watching "Desperate Housewives" tonight and they were talking about how Susan's character is one of those women who is attracted to drama. She often creates it herself through carelessness, questionable choices, etc. I suppose I'm like that to a certain extent, though I've mostly grown out of it (I hope). All of the drama in my life has been the relatively harmless variety, though. So I'm lucky!

Yes I think your particular drama is the of the spontaneous variety lol, or so it seems.

I loved when you wrote of the kids missing the 'old' van! It reminded me that if you ask my son what his favorite car of any we've had he'll say the white one with the red seats, which was a 1969 Chevy Impala. It drove like a dream but it certainly wasn't one you'd think a kid would remember, lol.

Yeah. That's what made me think about it - your question of whether my kids ever wanted a new van. Reminded me of their irrational fondness for the banana-mobile.

Regarding the drama thing - I remembered after I commented... Once I had 5 kids, they started providing all the drama I needed and then some. I mean, when you think about it, who would have 5 kids (even if the last two were twins) UNLESS they were drama addicts?? (NOT the same thing as drama QUEENS, btw).

And - YES - I suppose blended families count, too, my secret sister. :oD

WHO else could possibly understand me and my household besides you? lol As I was reading the last paragraph of your reply I thought to myself, "My God I AM a drama queen too!" lol Then I scrolled down to the last line and burst out laughing :)

Thanks sis ;)

Drama Addict. We can't stay away from drama. It gets us high. I've also been know to be very good in a crisis. Again, it's the drama addiction that does it.

Drama "queens" are a little different. They demand attention and create drama to achieve it. The attention can be positive or negative, as long as it's attention.
Drama addicts just crave a rush. We're generally fairly pragmatic people who can roll with the punches - its just boredom we can't stand.

There. That's my 10-cent psycho-babble for the day.

But we're not overtly dramatic, right? I mean in a usual circumstance. I think you're right that we gravitate toward drama. Well actually I didn't see it until you pointed it out to me, lol. I value your psycho babble, keep it coming :)

I agree with Shannon - you DO live such an intriguing life -- I guess a house full of little ones wouldn't be boring on a slow day... LOL!

I have so many memories from our first car... every car I see that's like it makes me smile. :)

Right - it's the drama "queens" that are dramatic. The drama addicts however, could have a drama queen in their life. More likely though, they just get attracted to all sorts of crazy stuff because they're not afraid of it.

Hey, girl! I never hear from you anymore. I miss you!! I'm not sure mine count as "little" since two of them are about as tall (or taller). But there is definitely NO lack of drama, especially where the older ones are concerned. How about you? Things smoothing out a little?

Well not only do you have drama, but you write about it so well! Great story! Reminds me of my dad's first car, that I remember that is. It was an old taxi too, then when he had the other two boys he bought a station wagon. Which we drove all over this country as we grew up! None of us bemoned its passing however! he next got a big old Buick which I learned to drive on!

Yes. I suppose it is a situational comedy. The 5 girls thing is the "gimmick". Beyond that, we just go with the natural plotlines. :oD

I thought we already were.

Drama addict = attracted to "drama" via interesting or intense experiences like driving old cars that might break down or having 5 or more children, or 3 or more marraiges.

Drama queen = (dictionary definition) any person who overreacts to a minor problem or situation.

Drama addicts are not bad. We just don't like too much serenity. We think we do...but we sabatage it at every chance! If we'd have only gotten involved in extreme sports when we were younger, we'd have a healthier outlet for this, and we wouldn't have had 5 children!!!

That is a lovely story.... I bet Trucker Steve tells it as well, with his own special spin.

Of course, now you're obligated to stop when you see families stranded and in distress. That's the thing about kindness... you have to pass it on.

Great post.

Every time I stop these days everyone says they've already called for help. And even though I'm a relatively small woman, people are sometimes a little distrustful of people who stop. These days I only stop for older, beater type cars where it looks like the owner may not have a cell phone, or older people or families. I figure the healthy looking guy with the newer car will be fine.

But I DO stop for turtles!!! I have a post somewhere in the archives (or was it an old destroyed blog??? *scratches head) about my daughter and I trying to rescue a very large snapping turtle from certain death on the interstate. Come to think of it, it was a great parable for rescueing virtually anyone from their own poor choices....dangerous and slightly insane. In the turtle's case, we did get him safely to the ditch.... What choices he made after that I was not responsible for!!!!
