Desert Blooms
03.27.05 (8:25 am)   [edit]

Death Valley, Calif., is known as the lowest, hottest and driest place in the United States. But this winter, record rains have created a wildflower bonanza, and people are flocking to the desert to see the show. Check out NPR's story here:  http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story .php?storyId=4521310" title="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story .php?storyId=4521310" target="_blank"http://www.npr.org/templates/...

This pic is from the Moab desert site, circa 2004.  Find the site here: http://www.ctheusa.net/FLOWERS/DSC02278.html" title="http://www.ctheusa.net/FLOWERS/DSC02278.html" target="_blank"http://www.ctheusa.net/FLOWER...

Saving the best for last:  Photographer Richard Dickey has spent 19 years documenting desert blooms.  His images are beyond stunning and I hope to use them as the models for paintings.  I have not placed any of his pics here due to copyright concerns, but you will be blown away should you visit his site...here:  http://www.feralflowers.com/home.html" title="http://www.feralflowers.com/home.html" target="_blank"http://www.feralflowers.com/h...  If you click on only one link, this one should be it.

Gosh, it almost makes me wish I could get myself to Death Valley to see all this beauty.

Did you check out the final site, Richard Dickey's? It's absolutely stunning. But it represents 19 years, not just one season in Death Valley (no matter how rare) so it's got incredible variety.

Amazing isn't it? Did you read his description of how he started? Tiera Del Fuego. 19 years of dedication. Really puts things into perspective....

Thanks. Lindy made me think of the desert bloom in Death Valley and I looked it up. Then I stumbled on Richard Dickey's site. Unfortunate name, supremely talented and fortunate photographer!!

I was soooooo trying to hold my tongue about his name. Please, please, PLEASE tell me he does NOT go by Dick or Dickey. looooooool. I can't stand it! I recently played host to a National Security guy who's name is Dickie and I swear, I had the worst time keeping a straight face every time I said his name. And to make matters worse, his bio stated that he was a champion of amatuer competitive decoy duck carving tournaments... huh??? Okay, off topic, sorry.

The pictures on the site are so exquisite that I am having a really hard time believing them to be photographs. He claims they are not color enhanced, but... my God!

Just out of curiosity... I reminded you of the desert bloom in death valley... how?

He seems to go by Richard, bless his heart.
The pictures are astonishing, true. But the most astonishing part is he dedicated his life to it and took every one. An Ansel Adams of his time and place.
You must not have read your SS comments. I was particularly proud of that one. Do you use your bookmarks page? The comparison is valid.

I like "I 'somewhat' nicely said..." better.

I think the original compliment was one of the nicest I've ever received from you.

nah Death Valley would be way sweeter than Montana if it looked that way all the time.
